NEW YORK – The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft on Wednesday, accusing them of using millions of articles from the newspaper without permission to teach artificial intelligence technologies.
The Times said it was the first major US media organization to sue OpenAI and Microsoft, which created ChatGPT and other AI platforms, over copyright issues.
According to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, the defendants seek to freeload The Times’ huge investment in its journalism by using it to create substitute products without permission or payment.
The Times is not asking for a specific amount of damages, but believes that OpenAI and Microsoft have caused “billions of dollars” in damages for the illegal copying and use of its works.
OpenAI and Microsoft didn’t incontinently respond to requests for comment.
