LONDON, An evening dress worn by the late Princess Diana has sold for $1.1 million, 11 times its estimate, breaking the record for one of her gowns to go under the hammer, Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles said.
Diana first wore a black and blue ballerina-length evening gown by designer Jacques Azaguri in Florence in 1985. She was also photographed wearing it a year later during a visit to Vancouver, the auction house said.
The dress, along with a matching design, sold for $1,148,080, Julien’s Auctions said Sunday after it had been estimated at $100,000 to $200,000.
“ Julien’s now holds the new world record for the most precious Princess Diana dress vended at transaction, ” the statement said, adding that the former transaction record was$ 604,800.
The dress consists of a long black velvet bodice, embroidered with blue stars, and a double tiered skirt of blue organza, decorated with a belt and a bow.
It was sold as part of Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM)’s four-day ‘Legends of Hollywood’ sale, which featured a range of memorabilia.
The pink chiffon blouse Diana wore for her portrait of Lord Snowdon at her engagement to then-Prince Charles in 1981 sold for $381,000.
The blouse by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, who designed Diana’s wedding dress, was estimated at $80,000-$100,000.
