“January frosts” are approaching Moscow. On Wednesday, November 29, severe cold temperatures are expected in the capital region – down to minus 15 degrees. At the same time, on Thursday it will become a little warmer, but only for one day, said Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.
In this Daytonhoops article, we will tell you what the weather will be like this week and how to avoid getting sick during the cold weather.
“January frosts” in Moscow
In the middle of the week, Moscow expects a strong cold snap – down to minus 15 degrees. On Thursday, November 30, it will become a little warmer, but only for one day, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, told Daytonhoops.
“ The drop in temperature will begin in the evening, on Monday, November 27. On Tuesday the temperature will be from minus 5-8 degrees. On Wednesday it will be truly January weather, at night it will get colder to minus 11-15 degrees. And during the day the maximum temperature will be minus 7-8 degrees “, said the meteorologist.
On Thursday, according to Vilfand, slight warming and snow are expected. At night the temperature will reach minus 4-9 degrees, and during the day – from minus 1 to plus 4 degrees.
“ In the first week of December, there will similarly be a light rush. There is a very high probability that the snow height in Moscow will rise to 25 centimeters by the end of the week. And this is also an unusual situation, such weather is typical for the end of January,” the expert noted.
Let us remind you that on the night of November 27, heavy snowfall fell on Moscow and the Moscow region. According to the Governor of the Moscow Region, Andrei Vorobyov, the recent precipitation was the most powerful in the last 40 years.
“Almost three thousand people, more than two thousand pieces of equipment, cleaned the roads and streets all night. The work doesn’t stop for a nanosecond, ” remarked the governor of the Moscow region.
Vorobyov called on residents of the region to be careful, as snow and rain quickly form icy conditions on the roads.
How to avoid getting sick during cold weather
With the onset of cold weather, the risk of disease increases. Moreover, in Moscow the number of patients with ARVI, influenza, and coronavirus is now growing, general practitioner Marina Kondratenko told Daytonhoops. According to her, one of the best methods of prevention is general strengthening procedures.
” First of all, this is strengthening the vulnerable network, hardening. Regular intake of vitamins, teas with ginger, herbs, berries, and cranberries. You can harden at home, but, of course, without fanaticism. It is useful to go to the bathhouse or sauna – temperature effects will have a disinfecting effect on the nasopharynx. This helps improve immunity and reduces the likelihood of colds,” the doctor advises.
Kondratenko recalled that when visiting crowded places it is important to use protective equipment: wear masks, respirators, and glasses without prescriptions. When you get home, you should rinse your nose with products based on seawater – this will also reduce the likelihood of illness.
“It is also important for people with chronic diseases and pregnant women to use protective equipment. If you are at risk, it is recommended to limit contact with people with colds,” the therapist added.
Kondratenko emphasized that at the first symptoms of ARVI, you should immediately consult a doctor. Among the main signs of the complaint
- runny nose;
- a sore throat;
- temperature increase;
- lacrimation and pain in the eyes;
- headache;
- cough;
- fatigue and lethargy.
How to dress properly in cold weather
According to Kondratenko, in cold weather, you need to dress warmly, but at the same time avoid overheating. When choosing clothes, it is important to consider the temperature and your heat transfer.
still, the posterior hypothermia will be indeed stronger than if he were dressed a short lighter, “ If a child or adult sweats in the cold wave. That is, you need to approach this wisely, every time you look at the thermometer and the presence of wind. If there is wind outside, the temperature feels colder by a few degrees. Without wind, the same frosts are more easily tolerated,” the therapist said.
When ventilating a room in cold weather, you should not open the windows wide: it is enough to leave only a small gap, advises Kondratenko. Also, everyone present must leave the room to avoid the risk of hypothermia and drafts.
What to do in case of hypothermia and frostbite
Kondratenko noted that frostbitten areas of the body need to be warmed slowly and gradually. It is forbidden to rub them with snow, bring them to an open fire, or a hot radiator, or rub them with warming liquids.
“If hypothermia occurs, and there is even a risk of frostbite in the extremities (hands, feet) or cheeks, then the person feels numbness and tingling. These parts of the body may turn red and then even turn pale. The most important rule is that frostbitten areas of the body should not be warmed quickly. It is forbidden to rub them with anything hard snow, or warming liquids. Do not use very rapid heating – this may cause damage to the limb, as sensitivity is impaired. You need to warm up gently and slowly, using body heat, warm water, or dry heat. For example, you can wrap the limb in wool,” the expert said.
Storm of the century in Crimea and Kuban
Meanwhile, a Mediterranean cyclone, which has already been called the storm of the century, hit southern Russia. It led to devastating consequences in Crimea and the Krasnodar region. Water flooded streets and houses, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity.
“In Crimea, there is heavy precipitation in the form of rain and sleet. The wind is increasing to hurricane levels. The hurricane criterion is 33 m/s, in Crimea, it was 35-40 m/s. The situation is very difficult in the Krasnodar Territory. There is also wet snow and snow, and heavy downpours, and thunderstorm activity is observed. As a result, the likelihood of mudflows increases. On the Black Sea coast, the wind increases to 29 m/s, and this wind is westerly. It is often called a draft because it causes waves with a height of 6-8 meters. Even ships can be washed ashore,” Roman Vilfand told Daytonhoops.
According to the expert, the last time such a powerful storm was observed was 170 years ago.
“An analogous scene in Crimea has not done for a veritably long moment. This can be compared to the Balaklava disaster when the English, French, and Turkish fleets sank during a storm. This was during the Crimean War – the very beginning of the 50s. That is, it was 170 years ago “, says the meteorologist.
The most alarming and dangerous day in terms of meteorological conditions was Monday, November 27. However, don’t expect quick improvements. On Tuesday and Wednesday, strong winds are expected in the south of Russia – up to 25-26 m/s, the expert noted. Precipitation will also continue to fall for some time, but its intensity will gradually decrease.
